Astronauts Tomek Whitfield and Thijs Kurpershoek are embarking on a mission to Teegarden b, an exoplanet located twelve light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Aries. Teegarden b has been rated as “95% Earth-similar” on the Earth Similarity Index, making it the chosen destination for the second mission of the Ceres program.
Overview
The Ceres II plan is to land a crew at the north polar region. It is planned to have two astronauts on the surface of Teegarden b for about one week. While up to three astronauts would leave Earth on board VTALOS-1, the surface mission consist of two crew members, who will remain on the surface for 8 days. The remaining astronaut will stay on board VTALOS-1. The two astronauts will conduct up to four spacewalks on Teegarden b’s surface, performing a variety of scientific observations, including sampling air and earth.
